Sallu's water woes!
Sonal Chawla, MUMBAI MIRROR, Jun 14, 2010, 10.56am IST

The cast and crew of Dabangg had to shoot a scene on Friday evening at Film City which required a factory to be in flames - but a sudden and heavy shower ruined their plans. By the time the showers abated, the soaking wet structure just wouldn't light up.

To make matters worse, it kept raining in spurts till at 3 am, the crew called it a night and decided to return in the morning to complete the shoot. Talk about raining on Salman's parade.

Salman Khan & Dabangg: The Party’s Just Started!
While the Internet is abuzz with the news of Salman Khan’s Dabangg first look being revealed, the film’s trailer has already hit theatres with Akshay Kumar’s Khatta Meetha. In the meanwhile, Salman Khan, leading lady Sonakshi Sinha, the film’s producer Arbaaz Khan and Chunky Pandey decided to have a party at a Mumbai pub on Thursday evening to celebrate the great response.

The Dabangg gang seemed to have enjoyed their evening to the fullest. So much so, that Salman and Sonakshi even posted a couple of photographs of their revelries on their Twitter micro-blogs. Let’s have a look…

In the meanwhile, the Bollywood Twitterati seemed to be very excited about the film and they all love Chulbul Pandey, the cop Salman plays in the film. Ritesh Deshmukh tweeted, “Muche ho to Chubul Pandey jaisi ho – Warna na ho. This year Eid will be big.”

While veteran actor Anupam Kher said, “It is a delightful film and Salman is at his best. He is charming, he is a rogue and so entertaining.” It seems like Salman has got his moustache (and diction) right for the Abhinav Kashyap film. Well, we all are waiting for September 10, when the film will release.

Dabangg Promo Gets Mind Blowing Response

Friday 23rd July 2010 18.00 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The Dabangg promo has got a mind blowing response from those who have seen it in the industry. The promo was talk of the town when first aired midweek and no doubt has become the most anticipated film of the year from a box office point of view. The promo was with the prints of Khatta Meetha and reports suggest the response is similar from the public as well.

Salman Khan is looking awesome and reminds one of Dharmendra in the 1975 mega hit Pratiggya. The look of the film and the dialogues are all set for huge appreciation and it will be no surprise if the film goes above Wanted at the box office.

The wait is for the music of the film and if that is a hit then the sky will be the limit for the success of this film.

Dabangg looks set for a mind boggling start all over India at multiplexes and single screens when it releases on 10th September which is Eid week.

Salman Khan Dabangg to bring blockbuster masala Hindi cinema back on silver screen with 'Da Bang'

Saturday, July 24, 2010

Now this is what you call masala Hindi cinema! The Dabangg trailer is all that the snotty nosed Barista-latte sipping critics will want to snide at; but this is the kind of movie that India's masses go to the theaters for in hordes. Dabangg type cinema, when well made, is the classic mass cinema of India. Which actually has a far bigger patronage and supportbase at the groundlevel, and with the public, than the typical Karan Johar type we-are-supposedly-indians-but-all-our-scenes-are-happening-in-newyork's-centralpark cinema.

Now there are no 100% guarantees with Dabangg either given that we have Arbaaz 'can-snatch-defeat-from-jaws-of-victory' Khan as the producer here and untested director in Abhinav Kashyap. But given the setup, and the mass, punchy dialogues of Dabangg shown in the theatrical trailer, one can safely conclude last year Wanted's opening collections will be easily trumped here. Even multiplexes where Wanted didn't do well.

With dialogues like 'hum yahan ke Robinhood Pandey hain', and 'police officer ko thokna kaa anjaam pata? ekkees saal jail aur thokai alag se', you can already hear the whistling in theaters all over in Kanpur, Delhi, Mumbai, Meerut, Indore, Bhopal, Jaipur etc. These are kinds of blockbuster setups a star like Amitabh Bachchan made his name off in movies like Suhaag, Don etc. in his heyday. And what an Abhishek Bachchan, has failed so miserably at with his neither-of-here-nor-there type disposition, and what only a few in Bombay's film industry over last 20 years (Govinda in 90s, Akshay Kumar) have been capable off; connecting with the Hindi public of Hindustan authentically. Talking in authentic, street language, with a damn-care attitude.

A point of note about Salman Khan and the Indian public here. Barring the rumors of the Pakistani underworld and Aishwarya Rai-Vivek Oberoi episode years back (which even Vivek Oberoi probably regrets now), where the actress managed to paint herself as some ideal 'Bhartiya' woman in distress type and Salman Khan as the villain, causing a significant enough number of people in North and Bombay to stop patronizing Salman Khan films in theaters during the last decade, denting his box office standing relative to other Khans, Roshan, Kumar, and then even likes of Ranbir Kapoor etc; but which epiosodes in retrospect are questionable in terms of associating guilt to Salman Khan; it should be recalled uptill then a Salman Khan was more popular with the mainstream Indian public more than just about everybody else. His biggest hits, for example, used to be bigger than Shahrukh Khan's biggest hits at one point (HAHK > DDLJ, Biwi No. 1 > Baadshah etc). And let's face it, you don't get the biggest hits and grossers of one's time in India without a film doing bumper in MP, UP, Rajasthan, Gujarat etc. And even as a muslim actor, unlike a Shahrukh Khan, his Indian and 'Hindi' credentials are not much in doubt at this point.

Salman Khan may also be back in favor with the mainstream Hindi public for not listening to LTTE-sympathizing goons earlier this year when the IIFA was to be held in Srilanka. People like Bachchans foolishly followed the likes of Mani Ratnam blindly, and ended up losing face with Indians and then got their film flopping on its face also. A double whammy. Now Salman Khan ends up looking better on that issue also and will definitely garner even more backing up ahead for not taking the easy way out.

So combine the renewed public support for Salman Khan and a dream role of classic 70s blockbuster type Hindi cinema with modern, film noir, 'kaminey-esque' treatment, and a 40-50 crore opening is what you are starting off from for a Dabangg to start with at minimum.

Doing a worst case-best case scenario for Salman Khan vis-a-vis the box office then. Even in the worst case scenario, Dabangg can't do as bad as a 'Mr. and Mrs. Khanna', London Dreams and some other duds involving the star over last several years.

But the likely odds are, with even a halfway decent script, Dabangg would be an outright blockbuster of India this year. And Salman Khan would have his biggest grosser and genuine hit since his heydays of the 1990s in India.

Who made Salman Robin Hood?
July 29, 2010 07:06:00 PM IST
Bollywood Trade News Network

Salman Khan likes to call himself Robin Hood Pandey in his upcoming film DABANGG, which is at the peak of its promotional activity these days.

And, here's one secret we caught hold of behind this unusual name. It's learnt that it was at the insistence of Sallu himself that the filmmaker decided to give him the name of Robin Hood.

DABANGG is a fun film which takes a satirical look at the system. Salman Khan in the role of a cop is already attracting a huge fan base. Plus his thin moustache is already becoming a craze of sorts.

So, Salman as Robin Hood Pandey is being keenly awaited at the box office. Now, how good will this Robin Hood be is something we don't have to wait for long to know.

Synopsis

"I do not want to be sheltered from dangers. I want to be fearless while facing them."

Dabangg means fearless.

Set in Laalgurj, Uttar Pradesh, Dabangg is a story of Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan), a totally fearless but corrupt police officer with unorthodox working methods. But even the most fearless at times face a tough fight with their innermost demons. Chulbul has had a bitter childhood. His father passed away when he was very young after which his mother Naini (Dimpla Kapadia) married Prajapati Pandey (Vinod Khanna). Together, they had a son Makhanchan (Arbaaz Khan). Prajapati favors Makhanchan which does not go down well with Chulbul. He decides to take control of his destiny and detaches himself from his stepfather and half brother. His sole attachment is his mother. However after his mother's demise and an unsuccessful attempt to mend wounds, Chulbul snaps all ties with his stepfather and half brother. Rajo (Sonakshi Sinha) with her unique perspective of life enters his world and turns life upside down. Chulbul starts to see life more positively and also gets sensitized to the value of a family.

But his detractors especially the dubious Cheddi Singh (Sonu Sood) have their own vested interests and emerge as spokes in the wheels, putting one brother against the other. Makhanchan ends up carrying out act oblivious to the consequences. When he realizes he has been used, he turns to Chulbul.

Will Chulbul take his extended hand?
Will the brothers be able to thwart their detractors?
Will this time, Chulbul's fearlessness channels itself positively and reunites him with his family?

Dabangg is a hard-hitting, entertaining, emotional narrative that unfolds grippingly in the region that has place only for the fearless.

When Salman lamented over police force
IndiaGlitz [Saturday, July 31, 2010]

Coming in a new, rough and tough avatar in his brother Arbaaz Khan’s maiden production ‘Dabangg’, Salman Khan is someone to watch out; for his looks and style.

Birdies got the latest whiff from sources that the film has taken inspiration from a popular dialogue from the blockbuster ‘Sholay’. They’re the famous lines said by Asrani in the film, that goes, “Aadhe idhar jao, aadhe udhar jao, baaki mere peeche aao”.

Incidentally the dialogue of the film was co-written by Salman’s father Salim Khan. And the team of ‘Dabangg’ have changed the dialogue to suit current situation.

In Salman’s film, the actor goes out for investigation along with his policemen and then states, “Mote wale iss taraf, patle vale uss taraf, aur jo fit hain wo mere peeche.” Amusingly when he turns back, he finds no one behind and he goes on to say, “Kya ho gaya hai police force ko?”

Justifying about the lines, director Abhinav Kashyap explained that they have not lifted the dialogue but have maintained the same flavour. He further went on to say that they taken the age-old dialogue a step forward and related it with the current situation. “It’s a comment on the fitness level of the police force today,” added the filmmaker.

Chulbul Pandey- salman's choice of name
Chulbul Pandey- An amusing name of Salman Khan in Dabangg movie
Monday, 02 August 2010 11:02 |
Written by Monia Gupta

In Bollywood movies, the characters get immortalized with their names in particular movie and these names linger long in the minds of audiences. Interestingly, sometimes these names become the sole identity of these actors. For instance, the character of Gabbar Singh played by Amjad Khan in “Sholay” is still living among us by its name and Amjad Khan was better recognized as Gabbar Singh most of the times despite of playing several characters with diverse names.

The character of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan played by Mr. Bachchan in “Agneepath” will never die owing to its name that will live forever. Shahrukh Khan mostly portrays the characters with Rahul’s name and Salman Khan has done numerous movies by playing Prem. Of course the shades of characters differ with different movies but names become the trademark of such actors.

Salman Khan in his upcoming venture “Dabangg” will pierce the silver screen with an unusual name as Chulbul Pandey. He has suggested comic reel name for himself which is already holding attention of audiences. He is portraying Bihari police officer and the name Chulbul Pandey is pinpointing the hilarious side of the character. Viewers have started liking him in cop’s uniform with moustache and acting as Chulbul Pandey. The name is pretty tempting and serves as an added attraction to the character. The name gives the comical feeling to the character and also brings the flavor of Bihari accent in it.

Salman Khan was first appeared as Chulbul Pandey at the IIFA Awards, Sri Lanka. The name is wooing the curiosity of audiences towards “Dabangg”. That is what expected by Salman Khan when he named his character. “Dabangg’s” director Abhinav Kashyap confirmed that the name was invented by Salman Khan and the moment he spoke out the name it created laughing riot at the sets. Salman wished his character to be witty and influential at the same instance.

“Dabangg” is being promoted by Salman Khan by giving special attention to Chulbul Pandey. It is the first film from Arbaaz Khan Productions. It is also the debutant movie of Sonakshi Sinha, daughter of veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha and of director’s Abhinav Kashyap, brother of renowned director Anurag Kashyap. The movie is slated to be released on Sep 10.

Salman's comic reel name is a smash hit
Now, Salman is trying to highlight the name. According to debut director Abhinav Kashyap, it was Salman's idea to make the character hilarious yet powerful. And it was his idea to suggest the name which is a unique combination of the legendary superhero and a local guy next door.

Abhinav said, " Salman wanted that the character's name to be such that it automatically generates interest among the audience and also sounds funny. The name was popped up by Salman and when we heard it for the first time, we could not stop laughing."...

Sonakshi Sinha donates her first pay
August 9, 2010 05:19:17 PM IST
Bollywood Trade News Network

For any newcomer his/her first pay is quite special for they love to splurge it their way. But not for our newbie - Sonakshi Sinha.

Well, it is being said that the pretty lady has donated her signing amount, which she received for her debut film DABANGG, to Salman Khan's Being Human Foundation.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Salman Khan gave her an opportunity to act as his leading lady in his home production, DABANGG. Sonakshi Sinha, in return, decided to say 'thank you' for this once-in-a-lifetime chance by donating the first cheque to the actor's foundation. And, we hear, Sonakshi has no regrets about it.

It's rare to see such benevolence coming from newcomers and Shatrughn Sinha's beautiful daughter has proved that she has a heart of gold. We wonder if Sallu was the inspiration behind this act.

Salman guards Sonakshi
August 11, 2010 06:23:07 PM IST
Ruhail, Bollywood Trade News Network

Salman Khan is known for getting protective about his loved ones. Be that his family, close pals or even his co-stars. Salman love is largely possessive in its flavour.

Now, all this is becoming evident yet again. This time Salman is all protection for none other than his current co-star Sonakshi Sinha.

Salman and Sonakshi share a long bond. In fact Salman is quite close to Sonakshi's family. This is one of the main reasons why Sonakshi was chosen to play the lead in DABANGG.

According to our sources, Salman is getting increasingly possessive about Sonakshi. Our sources further add, "Salman is making sure that Sonakshi does not land into any tight spot while interacting with the press. For this Salman makes sure that he intervenes whenever a tough question is posed to her. Moreover, Salman does not want Sonakshi to court any controversy, so he's going all out to guide her and protect her at the moment."

Though, most of the newcomers opposite Salman have not had a lucky run at the box-office, but Sonakshi's case looks an exception.

Court rejects suit against Dabangg song
HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times

Mumbai, September 09, 2010First Published: 02:20 IST(9/9/2010)
Last Updated: 02:21 IST(9/9/2010)

The civil court rejected a suit against forthcoming Salman Khan-starrer Dabangg seeking the deletion of the word ‘Hindustan’ from a song in the film on Wednesday. The suit filed by International Human Rights Association through its director, Rajkumar Tak, had said the song has used the nation’s name hurting the patriotic sentiments of every citizen of India. The court rejected the suit observing that the plaintiff did not have proper documents to show the NGO has an office in Mumbai.

“The court observed that the NGO is based in Pune and they don’t have proper documents to show they have an office in Mumbai,” said Tak’s advocate Sushan Kunjuraman.

Tak in the petition had said the song with lyrics saying ‘Leh Hindustan hui darling tere liye’ shows a girl dancing surrounded by anti-social elements and a corrupt police officer in police uniform. Tak had also said that the producers, director and lyricist have severally and jointly committed grave mockery of the nation, which is objectionable and unpardonable.

The film is scheduled to release this Friday.

India On High Alert: Outbreak Of ‘Dabangg’ Epidemic, Salman Worried But Thrilled
Komal Nahta

India is in the grip of an epidemic. The young and the old, the rich and the poor, the guys and the gals, all of them seem to be in the grip of this epidemic. It has affected many seriously while many others are showing mild rather than serious symptoms.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Doctors and researchers have termed it the Dabangg Epidemic. Those hit by the epidemic can’t talk of anything but Dabangg. They hum songs of the Salman Khan starrer all day, stand in queues to book tickets for the film and generally discuss and tweet about the flick.

Although there has been no cure found yet for this infectious disease, researchers are hopeful of making a breakthrough on 10th September when ‘Dabangg’ will hit the screens. Although the medicine, still under preparation, is to be tested on the public, some tests have been carried out in private and the patients have responded brilliantly. Koimoi.com learns that those who will see Dabangg on Friday will experience instant relief and will, in fact, feel extra fit and fine. Koimoi.com also predicts that after being cured, a section of the large mass of patients might take a double dose of the movie just so that they don’t get infected by the disease again!
