Salim Khan on why son Salman Khan is still single
Wednesday, 06 October , 2010, 10:00

Why is Salman Khan still single? Dad Salim Khan has the answer to the question that has vexed so many of his fans -- 'mama's boy' Salman, he says, can't fix on a girl because he mostly falls for actresses who can't pamper him like his mother.

"There's a contradiction in Salman's character. He gets attracted to women from his industry only... his co-stars become his love interests. Once a relationship is established, he starts looking for his mom in them. Now that is not possible," Salim told trade analyst Komal Nahta on ETC's show Bollywood Business.

"A woman who has just started her career can't be doing stuff like preparing meals, washing clothes, preparing kids and yet lead the hectic life of a movie star! This expectation can't be met by a woman who has just started her film career…not even if she tries," reasoned the 74-year-old, who made a rocking scriptwriting team with Javed Akhtar.

Salman, 44, who is Salim's eldest son, has been involved with actresses like Somy Ali, Sangeeta Bijlani and Aishwarya Rai.

The 44-year-old is said to have split from his latest girlfriend, actress Katrina Kaif.

Salim dodged the question, saying: "I can't say if Katrina is in Salman's life... If a marriage decision stretches for so long, it usually does not happen. It means that the person is not 100 percent sure to get into it…that's why the delay."

According to Salim, who is credited for scripting films like Seeta aur Geeta, Zanjeer, Deewaar, Sholay and Trishul, Salman suffers heartbreaks because for most of his girls' prime motive is stardom.

"Whenever girls have come into Salman's life, they are looking to be a movie star. So settling down is the last thing on their minds. So the relationships reach a saturation point and then fizzle out."

Salim has two other sons - Arbaaz and Sohail, and a daughter, Alvira, from his first wife Salma. He later married Bollywood's cabaret queen Helen, and adopted a daughter named Arpita.

The episode featuring the writer in a candid mood will be on air on ETC Thursday.

What Govt couldn't, Sallu did!
Reshma Kelkar Dabholkar, TNN, Nov 14, 2010, 01.47pm IST

Actor Salman Khan is proud to have become the first bone marrow donor and associate himself and his foundation 'Being Human' with the Marrow Donor Registry, India (MDRI).

Dr. Sunil Parekh who is on the board of MDRI said, "The people suffering from disease and I thank Salman Khan for coming forward and taking up our cause. Four years ago, Salman had read about Pooja, a little girl who was in need of bone marrow transplant. He got his entire football team to come and donate marrow. Unfortunately, they all backed out last minute, and only Salman and Arbaaz landed up donating and became the first donors.

"We made a foolish mistake to depend on the government in 2004," continued Dr. Parekh, "we didn't get the right help..."

Salman Khan, who is passionate about the cause of saving lives, is all set to convince not only the aam junta, but also his Bollywood friends to donate marrow and urge them to create awareness. He isn't keen to make a film around this either 'because such films don't work, nobody goes to watch them'. "I tried approaching the cause of AIDS via a film 'Phir Milenge'. It didn't work well. It's proof enough that such cinema is not popular with the masses," he explained.

"We have only 5000 donors currently. It's not merely the lack of awareness; it's our attitude that's also the problem. And this will make us responsible for patients' lives. Donate marrow and save a life. It's just like a blood test and doesn't take time. I know some people are scared of blood tests, too... but it's time to become a little brave and make a big difference," urged Sallu.

Mumbai: Salman Khan and his philanthrophy are going from strength to strength. His 'Being Human' fashion show, a while ago, was a certified winner as beauties including Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Rani Mukerji, Sushmita Sen, Bipasha Basu and Preity Zinta sported his 'Being Human' tees and set the ramp scorching.

Common folks, however, can also avail of the thrill of owning Salman's 'Being Human' tees! And they're faaaaaaarrrrrrrr from pricey…at Rs. 495 each for a man's tee shirt, while the female one could be purchased for Rs. 435 each.

Salman's thrilled to smithereens as his fashion merchandise can now touch more lives and contribute in good measure to charity, as well.

"I chose the outlet brand where it will sell after a great deal of deliberation as their ethos is to provide quality and comfort at an accessible price," Salman is quoted as saying in a newpaper article.

The heartening bit of news, however, is that Rs. 100 from every sale will be contributed towards the 'Being Human' Foundation.

At present, only the basic logo t shirts are available and more designs will follow in the near future. Even as Salman elated over this one, a top honcho of the brand crowed to the media over how proud the brand was to "help the twin causes of education and healthcare and how business houses have a role to play in the greater good of society."

Salman Khan stood out in the crowd making a style statement in a blue ghingham shirt, hound’s tooth coat and jeans at Global Indian Music Awards 2010 at Yashraj studios in Mumbai on November 10.

Camera flashes and shouts from fans just couldn’t stop as soon as Sallu bhai made his dashing entry. He was at his best posing for photographs and answering media questions with patience.

The Dabangg star performed to songs from the film; he told the media that he considered the popularity of the songs as a just award for them.
